Wayang Golek is a traditional form of puppetry from West Java, Indonesia.
Unlike flat shadow puppets, these puppets are three-dimensional and they do not use a screen when performing. The puppets are hand carved of wood and are ornate with colourful costumes, and they have moveable arms attached to 2 small sticks and fancy head on the main controlling stick. The puppeteer sits on the floor behind a low "table" on which the puppets perform.
In Indonesia, the shows are performed for at least six hours during the night, accompanied by gamelan music, with speech and singing to tell the story. The stories are usually based on the epic stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. In Indonesia, people are familiar with the different characters appearing in the stories, which can be recognized by the size, shape, colour and angle of their eyes and nose and the way they walk, talk, sing, dance and fight. You however could make up your own stories with your very own Wayang Golek. They come in Male and Female figures. I can't believe it. We are out of stock on these fine puppets. They still can be acquired, but a wait of a few weeks is in order, so let us know what you would desire.
