The next wave in mobile entertainment! Watch movies & play video games all in your car, truck or van. NO, IT'S NOT MEANT FOR THE DRIVER!! In fact , in New York State it's illegal to have an active video screen in the front seat area of the vehicle. BUT! As entertainment for the kids in the back of the minivan or as a very cool addition to your sound system, there are many options available. Rather than get too specific, we'll go over some basic options.
When adding video to your vehicle, there are two basic choices. The first is adding video to your existing audio system. The second is to replace your existing audio system with a combined audio/video system.
If you choose option #1, the simplest method is called "FM modulated" which basically feeds the audio output for your video system through the FM band of your radio. This is a good news/bad news scenario. The good news is that it is inexpensive and requires no alterations to the factory (or existing) audio system. The bad news is that because the signal goes through your FM radio, the frequency response will be somewhat less than a direct connect system and you lose the digital sound quality of a DVD. One way out of this drawback is if your factory radio has a CD changer or the option for one there are special modules available that allow "direct connect" of your video system. The modules cost a bit more than FM modulated systems and they are not available for every vehicle (yet), but they are more than worth the cost in sound quality. Option #2 is to install a complete A/V system. There are several reasons why this is a good choice. There are several AM/FM/CD/DVD decks available that put it all in one nice package that fits right into the factory stereo location. This also affords you the digital sound quality of your DVD, along with the digital picture quality. Many of these multiple source decks allow "dual zone" listening that allows the front seat passengers to, say, listen to the radio while the rear seat passengers watch the movie. VERY COOL! Some have screens built in and others use outboard screens. This method costs more than the "add on" method, but if you have ever been "wowed" by a DVD on a home theatre system, this is the option for you.
In the realm of screens; just as there are countless choices for your monitor at home, so there are for your vehicle. Screen sizes go anywhere from 4" diagonal up to 25" (yes--25" screens for CARS!). The most popular sizes tend to be from about 6-10". The mounting locations are also numerous. The most popular location tends to be a "flip Down" ceiling mount because one screen can be used for everyone in the back seat. However, monitors can be mounted in or on headrests, in or on center consoles, in or on dashboards, or just about anywhere space permits! There is an area of caution when choosing a screen; BEWARE THE BARGAIN BASEMENT SCREEN! In the realm of screens for cars, you will hear terms like LCD, TFT, pixel rates and more. Confused? Let's make it simple. Comparing screens in person will tell you what you need to know. Look at sharpness, color saturation and accuracy. Last but not very least...look at off axis viewing. This is where the cheapie screens usually show their lack of value. Off axis viewing means looking at the screen from one side or the other. In a vehicle, the likelihood is that you will not be sitting directly in front of the screen. Cheaper screens tend to "wash out" or even lose the image as you move from side to side. In audio, we tell you to let your ears decide. In video, let your eyes tell you what's right.
The last point to add when discussing mobile video is the audio aspect. Many DVD's now come with encoded 5.1, surround sound, Dolby Pro Logic and others. If you look to get the most out of your system, you will want to look into the incredible selection of options to put multi-channel audio in your vehicle. We can give you a true home theatre experience in your vehicle and prices start even lower than a decent home theatre system. Stop in and discuss your options and the system for you!
