This page will be dedicated to the Steens Mountain Wilderness and National Scenic Byway in southeast Oregon. Steens Mountain is one of the country's newest designated Wilderness Areas. The Steens is a land of dramatic contrast: classic U-shaped glacial valleys, groves of quaking aspen, rolling steppes of sage and mountain mahogany, uplands lush with bunch grass and wild flowers, crystal streams, and sheer mountain rims falling away thousands of feet to sparkling alkali deserts.
