HEALTH CARE:  Serving a population of over 230,000 in Central and Eastern Oregon, medical services in Bend and Redmond provide excellent emergency, inpatient, outpatient, and long-term health care, centered on a sophisticated, modern hospital system.  The hospital is partnered with recently-constructed cardiovascular, neurosurgical-orthopedic, general surgical, cancer care, and multi-specialty physician centers on campuses in the two cities.  There are many other orthodox and alternative care practitioners in the area.  Home health care, modern assisted living and long-term care facilities are all readily available.  

SPORTS AND RECREATION:  It's not uncommon for Central Oregonians to hit the ski slopes in the morning and the links in the afternoon!  Sometimes recreational opportunities are merely a matter of altitude.  Our High Desert “playground” provides four seasons of outdoor fun, from traditional pursuits like golf and hiking to more extreme adventures like whitewater rafting and rock climbing.  Click on the photo, choose your own level of difficulty, and come prepared to play!

WILDERNESS AND WILDLANDS:  Need to get away from civilization for awhile?  Central Oregon’s abundant wilderness areas and wildlands beckon with recreational opportunities ranging from solitary hikes through pungent Ponderosa forests to spectacular fly fishing on crystalline streams.  Whether you prefer to hunt wildlife with camera or rifle, click on the photo to the left to find links to all things wild on the High Desert and in the majestic mountain reaches that surround us.   

ATTRACTIONS:  You’ll not find a “Top Ten List of Things to See and Do” here!  It’s impossible to whittle the options down to ten, or maybe even a hundred.  Click on the photo from Smith Rock State Park for a sizeable sampler of Central Oregon attractions, including awesome natural wonders, spectacular scenic drives, museums, cultural centers, extraordinary shopping districts - just to name a few.  You’ll also find quirky, unique-to-Central-Oregon sites to explore.  Never again will you, your houseguests, or the kids whine, “I’m bored!

SPECIAL EVENTS:  It would be a rare weekend in Central Oregon if there weren’t some sort of event going on that would appeal to residents and visitors alike!  Are you interested in golf tournaments, parades, or brew fests?  Do you like to attend symphonies, car shows, rodeos, or film festivals?  You’ll find all these – and much more – throughout the year.  Get ready to mark up your calendar, but don’t be surprised if you have to choose between events to attend!

REGIONAL HISTORY:  Central Oregon has been populated by Native Americans for many centuries, while Euro-Americans are relative newcomers, arriving in the early 1800s.  Click on the photo to the right and delve into the High Desert’s fascinating history - of the original inhabitants, explorers, fur traders, outlaws, stock ranchers, dry farmers, railroad men, and timber barons - and watch the territory evolve from raw wilderness to the modern residential, recreational and commercial area it is today.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:  Central Oregon may be an outdoor recreation playground, but you’ll also find plenty of ways to exercise the brain.  Several colleges offer courses in classrooms or on-line, for credit or for personal enjoyment.  Redmond and Bend also offer adult programs through their respective Park and Recreation Departments.  Click on the books to the left for more information.

DINING OUT:  Man may not live by bread alone, but dining out certainly is one of life’s delicious delights!  From Abby’s Legendary Pizza to Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails…from appetizers to desserts…Central Oregon’s restaurants are sure to please even the most discriminating palate.  You’ll find a wide variety of fine cuisine, including Mexican, Italian, Asian, and fresh Pacific Northwest seafood.  Click on the photo of the diners to explore links to culinary establishments arranged alphabetically, by specialty, or by city.

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT:  Trite and overused it may be, but the term “Mecca for the Arts” really does fit Central Oregon.  Not to mention the variety!  If Country and Western is your passion, you can find a superb group of performers in the area on any weekend.  Classical?  Jazz?  Blue Grass?  They’re all here - and we’ve only mentioned the music.  Graphic arts, drama, standup comedy, movies - all are well represented.  Galleries galore can be found in Bend, Redmond, and Sisters, along with excellent first run films.  Just click on the photo to the left for a sampling of what’s on offer.
OREGON - THE EDGES AND THE CORNERS:  Central Oregon has it all!  Majestic mountains, enchanting desertlands, sparkling rivers and streams.   Well, actually there are a few things it doesn’t have - like a large, world-class city; an ocean view with pristine beaches; a magnificent half-mile wide river spanned by gigantic dams; world famous Crater Lake.  However, because it is so central, Central Oregon  is within an easy drive to these and many other fascinating places.  Click on Mount Hood for an interactive guide.
