CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
The Arc of Sedgwick County's newest program provides special education students with the opportunity to gain confidence and friendships through a mentor relationship with another teen. Our Circle of Friends program pairs regular education students as mentors with special education students. The mentoring for kids program is designed to function in a reciprocal manner. Mentors gain confidence acting as a leader, while their peer  with special needs gains the support and guidance of a regular ed. peer. Children interested in becoming a mentor are encouraged to apply.

Information and Referral
Providing needed information and education as well as a connection to needed resources and services.  Since 1953, we have answered the calls of those in need.

Self Advocacy
...helping to develop independence for those with developmental disabilities
The “Shooting Stars” are a group of self advocates working to become leaders, to become accepted members of society with a voice that is not only heard, but continually growing stronger, and to stand up for their rights and the rights of those around them.

Many of our Shooting Stars volunteer throughout the year to support programs at The Arc and to reach out to others in need.  They sponsor the Thankful Feast Event, serving over 260 last year, and the Adopt a Family Christmas program sharing gifts with individuals and families who might have nothing otherwise.  They also have donated thousands to The Arc in support of Arc projects and money raised through their Celebrity Auction. Each spring, the Celebrity Auction provides over 2,000 celebrity and community items for public purchase. The Self Advocates hand-write hundreds of letters to a variety of international celebrities to solicit signed collectible items. This annual event offers both a silent and live auction, as well as camaraderie and great food.

Awareness Through The Arts
The Pride Performers have entertained thousands sharing their extraordinary stories and many talents.  The program helps to breakdown stereotypes by focusing on abilities and not disabilities.  It also shares stories of hope and reminds everyone to dream big and never give up.

Support Groups

Education
The Arc provides education opportunities for families and the community with seminars and workshops on topics concerning them.  The Arc also provides community education, much like the Awareness Through The Arts;  The Arc is working to educate the community on developmental disabilities and to break down stereotypes.  This education includes trainings for the Wichita Police Department on working with people with disabilities, sharing with classes K-12 as well as for college students.  Sharing with employers and employees through dozens of presentations including those for the United Way.
