Respect Life is a ministry that attempts to bring awareness within the parish to the clash between the culture of life and the culture of death. On a yearly basis, the Rosary Crusade for Life is organized in our parish.  Rosaries are said throughout the month of October for an end to all assaults on life. The parish count is added to the South Carolina statewide crusade. Our crusade is then culminated with an all night vigil for life in conjunction with the Knights of Columbus. Pro-life flyers are inserted in bulletins on Right to Life Sunday. Also in October, parishioners are encouraged to participate in the Life Chain at the government center in Beaufort. This is an hour long, silent protest against assaults on life.

In January, the month of the anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision, white crosses, one for each million abortions performed in the country, are installed at the front of the church. Bulletin announcements are also provided informing parishioners of local, state and national marches for life.

Throughout the year as well, Respect Life bulletin announcements are provided to the parish along with any additional information regarding pro-life activities in the area.

The parish Spiritual Adoption program begins the weekend of August 15-16. The poster "I am here" depicts the very beginning of the nine-month journey before birth. Please recognize the child's existence and join in prayer for him/her and the parents. Prayer cards will be available in the narthex and the Blessed Sacrament chapel after August 16.

   Created, Loved, Redeemed by God

The baby can now squint, swallow and move her tongue.  She sleeps and awakens.  Fingernails and toenails form and she now has her own unique set of fingerprints.  Sensitive to touch, she will tightly grasp an object placed in the palm of her hand.  She breathes amniotic fluid to help develop and strengthen the respiratory system, but she gets the oxygen she needs through the umbilical cord.  She is about three inches “tall: and weighs one ounce.  Please remember to pray daily for your Spiritually Adopted Baby and the baby’s mother and father.

Prayer cards are available in the narthex and Adoration Chapel.

Abortion is an affliction of the heart and mind that causes the death of preborn children.  Remedy – the grace of God as gained through prayer, penance and sacrifice.  Please help fill that prescription – join the Spiritual Adoption League by praying each day for nine months for the life of an unborn child in danger of being aborted and for the parents of that particular child so that they may accept the grace and have the courage to allow the child to be born:

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph I love you very much.  I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

(Prayer cards are available in the narthex and Adoration Chapel.)

HEALTH CARE REFORM ISSUES REQUIRE ACTION NOW

The federal health care debate is a hot topic in both houses of Congress in Washington, DC, and could come up for a vote immediately after the August recess. Action is urgently needed NOW.

Current plans before Congress, if enacted as written, could have profound effects on every American whether they are currently covered by health insurance or not.

You are encouraged to take action by (a) calling your two Senators and one Congressman and (b) by calling the leadership of the Blue Dog Democrats in the House of Representatives who likely will play a key role in the final resolution of the issue.

Ask each person you contact to oppose any "health care reform" legislation that does not explicitly exclude abortion and that any health care reform legislation must protect American citizens from rationing or denial of treatment because of age, disability or "quality of life." These provisions could force institutions and medical personnel who oppose any of the above procedures to violate their deeply held ethical, religious or moral convictions. No conscience clause exists in the pending legislation.

You can reach our Senators and Congressman as follows:

Senator Jim DeMint: by phone at 843 849-3887 or 202 224-6121 or via email at www.demint.senate.gov.

PRAY TO ST. GERARD

St. Gerard has been helping couples considered infertile to conceive. Thousands have testified how he answered their prayers with the birth of a child that doctors insisted was a medical impossibility or saved a mother dying in childbirth. By popular acclaim he is called the "patron of mothers, patron of motherhood and protector of expectant mothers and their unborn children." St. Gerard prayer cards are available in the narthex.
