History of the Land Barns, Battlefields and a Bountiful Southern Life
History runs deep in the grains of hardwood trees and strong Southern families that made their homes and their livelihoods on the land that once was granted by the British Crown to the settlers of this region.
What is now York County was once part of North Carolina but as governments changed so did the names, property lines and jurisdictions. In the New Acquistition, this land became known as The District of York and then York County, South Carolina.
History tells us that this land was valued for its beauty, its crops, which were mostly cotton and for the community that embraced the families that lived here.
|
| There is a marker on this land that acknowledges its owner, Col. Samual Watson whose family owned this land for many years.
A description of this land was recorded as follows "My father, James Watson, was born in the District of York, SC in 1769, on a farm consisting of 350 acres on excellent land, heavily timbered and well-watered, with about 60 acres under cultivation with necessary outbuildings, fences, superior to those of most of the farms in the vacinity."
Near the old farmhouse that remains on the site was Col. Watson's home which was used as a commissary during the Revolutionary War.
| | Historically significant; this area as well as nearby battlefields such as Brattonsville and Kings Mountain, serves to remind us of the sacrifices that were made for the freedoms that we all enjoy today.

New markers brand Olde York Farms community
Marking the boundaries of Olde York Farms is a series of huge monuments designed by Duane F. Christopher & Associates of Rock Hill, South Carolina.
These works of stone, wood and iron represents the design philosophy established by Nation Land Company to create a sense of place and permanence that will mark the historically significant land for years to come.
Each element of the monuments holds meaning - the shape is classical a style, the base is reminiscent of an old fortress foundation used in medieval times, the top is a classical monument and pyramid shape dating back to Egyptian architecture, the wood beam represents the farm ant the iron rings symbolize the equestrian tie for the horse.
The lettering on the sign is an old Celtic-style to reference the English, Scottish and Irish settlers in the area. Lastly, the horse relief is an equestrian symbol that represents freedom.
The monuments were constructed through the talents and labors of masons and metalworkers creating the unique branding features that tower above the roadways and anchor the black equestrian-style fencing throughout the property.

The Town of York
Historic Downtown York – The White Rose City
The Town of York (originally known as Fergus Crossroads and then Yorkville), was a hub of ac- tivity for local families. The railroad took their crops to market, the townfolk provided community life and the roadways (and paths that ran through it were their connection to culture, education and religious expression for all of the area families.
While life has changed dramatically from that time, many of the virtues and values of village life remain. York continues to be the heartbeat of this area with main street life that includes shopping, dining, entertainment and services for area residents.
In addition, York is a bustling towncenter on weekends throughout the year with activities, music, bike races and events. The annual Summerfest celebration draws a reported 40,000 visitors to this area every August for a celebration of arts, culture and music. Fall brings a streetfair in Down- town York and the Annual Christmas Parade and Historic Homes Christmas Tour are community favorites.
No Matter what time of year, strolling along the quaint streets in the village of York is both relaxing and re- warding – neighbors meeting neighbors, grabbing a bite to eat or just window-shopping on a Saturday afternoon. Connecting to this community and its history will be of value to those who chose Olde York Farms to make their home.
Building a present on the pages of York’s history is very much a part of the lifestyle of this place. Respect for the past is evident here – in 1776, York created one of the largest historic districts in the State of South Carolina with over 180 historic landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
