4th Sundays!

YJSOAH, is a monthly event which provides a forum for people to meet and share what is creative or extraordinary about their lives with each other.  Have you written or read an inspiring poem lately?  Do you have an inspirational story to tell? Can you sing a song?  Can you share your dreams and apirations, whatever touches your heart and sets you afire each time it comes to mind. Whether it be poetry, art, music, story-telling, dance, photography, film, this is an opportunity to share your joy with others and openly discuss each topic in a way that allow both you and other participants to experience life, living, learning, and who they are, in an entirely new, fun and dare I say, joyful way, and in the process develop friendships that last a lifetime, and create a new quality to your life while contributing to the life around you.

The word "YJSOAH" (pronounced why-ji-so-wah), is an acronymn for Your Joy is the Source of All Happiness, and the concept is the brainchild of Ray Johnson (pictured top, left), a Mount Vernon resident who has grown nostalgic for the times of his youth, a time when he was experienced some of his greatest happiness. "Years ago, like so many others, I saw the film 'Dead Poet's Society' and was moved to do something similar to what the students were doing...meet in some secret place and share our dreams, hopes, joys, pain, share the fire in our hearts and create in each other better human beings as a result."  Mr. Johnson is bringing fullfilment to the words of Henry David Thoreau:

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, to discover that I had not lived.  I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary.  I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and to be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion."

Walden or Life in the Woods - Henry David Thoreau (1817 – 1862)

Although the movie abbreviated Thoreau's quote, it was no less moving or inspiring.  Recently, Ray was again inspired by the discovery that groups based on the Dead Poet's Society's concept are popping up all over the country, and he began looking into how he could bring this idea to fruition right here in the City of Mount Vernon, "...where there are so many people who I do not know and so many people who don't know each other", says Mr Johnson. Another spark came from within his own family, where relatives live in close proximity, in Mount Vernon, the Bronx and Brooklyn, and either see each other rarely or for that matter, don't even know each other.

Each monthly event will be unpredictable and fun and will evoke joy and and create happiness for each participant. Perhaps you recall that your happiest times were those times you were passionately sharing with those around you and enjoying the experience, dreaming, imagining, listening, loving.  And you revelled in it!  What creative experience do you want to share?

  • Have you written a poem?
  • Have you composed a song you like (You can have musical
    guitar accompaniment for your song!)
  • Maybe you've discovered a really great CD?
  • Or a movie with a great story line?
  • Or have you've read something great in a recent book?
  • Do you play an instrument?  Bring your instrument and play for us.
  • Anything goes as long as it's creative

Embrace all that it beautiful and joyful in your life, then share it.  Like the flame of a candle that can light many other candles or create a roaring fire, without losing it's essence, when you share you...you become larger than you were before sharing.

Come.  Share yourself.  Discover who you truly are!

Cherish your visions. Cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these, if you but remain true to them, your world will at last be built.
~ James Allen, from As a Man Thinketh

In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
