Mission Statement:

The Por La Gente Association of Racine is a non-profit organization which began in 1984. Por La Gente strives towards promoting athletics and recreation within the Latino community in the City of Racine. The Association hosts annual basketball, softball, volleyball tournaments, a golf outing and trivia nights to fund our annual scholarship program. The Por La Gente Asssociation awards two scholarships to Racine area Latino high school students for college.

History of Por La Gente:

Por La Gente, what does that mean? It translates into “by the people” but it can also mean “for the people.” For the Por La Gente Softball, it means both. Por La Gente started as a bunch of guys who had played together for a few years and decided to give something back to those who supported them, hence the name Por La Gente.

Por La Gente has used sports as the vehicle in giving back to the community. Softball in particular, has played a big role in doing that. Through softball, Por La Gente has provided entertainment, role models and funds for scholarships.

Not many teams can say they have been around for 30 years. Thus, it is not just the longevity that makes PLG special, rather for 30 years, PLG has been the epitome of sportsmanship, team work, and a winning tradition.

In the long and storied history of PLG softball, there have been many players for which they all had one thing in common. They believed in the Por La Gente credo – team before player. Por La Gente takes pride in the fact that they play with heart, passion and desire.

Over the last 30 years, many of the players have continued to serve as role models after they have stopped competing. Some are in education, some in law enforcement, and many in business. Whatever they have chosen, they continue to give back to the community.

Por La Gente has provided funds for scholarships. The Por La Gente Latino Softball Invitational Tournament, now in its 25th year, serves as a major fundraiser for the Association. Every Labor Day weekend, thousands come to watch dozens of Latino men’s and women’s teams compete at Island and Lincoln Parks. The tournament if one of the biggest and best tournaments in Wisconsin. The success of the tournament is due to the commitment of the Por La Gente and all the volunteers.

This year, Por La Gente has added to the tradition. This year was the first year of the Por La Gente Women’s Team. May their reign be long and successful!
