COMPUTERS FOR KIDS IN NEED Jess D. Reeves Sr., CEO P.O. Box 4110 Nooksack, WA 98276 (360) 966-5777 E-mail: computersforkidz@aol.com In 2001 I started Computers for Kids in Need as a retirement project to share my expertise with the community for the following purposes:
1. To help needy families and disabled vets to get computers they need and cannot afford to buy,
2. To keep usable materials out of landfills,
3. To keep my mind and body active.
At Computers for Kids in Need we take in used computers (Pentium 1 or better). From the usable parts I put together computer systems to give to qualifying clients. The computers we give out have all previous information permanently removed and Windows98, Office97, and Norton's System Works loaded. To date we have given out 250 computer systems.
Over half the computers I receive are defective. I take out the usable parts and recycle the remainder. Only the plastic face and knobs go to the dump. To date we have recycled 328 computers.
We cooperate with Blue Skies for Children, Lydia House, Brigid Collins House, Northwest Indian Vocational Rehabilitation Program, Bellingham Veterans Center, Fenix International, Displaced Homemakers, Nooksack and Lynden School District's "Even Start" and Family Community Services programs to help service their clients with needed computers.
Computers for Kids in Need is a State of Washington licensed, and IRS 501-c3 non-profit organization.
Financial support for Computers for Kids in Need, at this time, comes from my own limited retirement resources and occasional small donations from individual contributors. We can generate a small amount of cash through recycling the electronics of non-working computers. Monetary contributions are always welcome.
Our greatest need, at the moment is money to purchase 56K modems to install into the computers, since there is always a shortage of them on our shelves. Transportation is a big expense we could use help with. At this time I use my personal passenger car to pick up and deliver computers and take items to recycle. Last year I put over 12,000 miles on my vehicle for Computers for Kids in Need's business.
We always are glad to receive computer donations from individual and businesses. We also accept referrals of families who need a computer and cannot afford to buy one.
