Patient Preparation

You will be given specific preparation instructions for your exam by one of our Patient Services Representatives when your appointment is made or confirmed over the phone.

Please alert us, when we are scheduling your exam, if you are diabetic, have any allergies or special medical concerns or conditions

To ensure the successful completion of an examination and to maximize diagnostic quality, we ask that patients follow the preparatory procedures carefully and as instructed by the facility where your exam is scheduled.

General preparation guidelines are listed below:

Computerized Axial Tomography
     For Abdominal or Pelvis Exams only:
     Eat nothing for at least three (3) hours
     prior to your exam. Please drink 3-4
     eight(8) oz glasses of water before the
     exam. You may be asked to change into
     patient gowns for your exam.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging   
     Eat nothing for at least three (3) hours 
     prior to your exam.  Instead drink 3-4 
     glasses of water prior to your exam.
     Please remove all jewelry. You may be
     asked to change into patient gowns for
     your exam.

Positron Emission Tomography Scan
    On the day BEFORE the exam, please eat a high
    protein diet. This includes eating food such as eggs,
    bacon, beef, pork, chicken, penut butter, etc.
    On the day BEFORE the exam, please follow a low
    carbohydrate diet. This includes not eating foods
    containing processed sugars, & those foods high in
    natural sugars for the day prior to your exam.
    Foods to avoid include:
    -Processed sugar of any kind (candy, gum, cakes,
     cookies, jams, jellies, pies, syrups, sweetened
     sodas, etc.
    -All fruit/fruit juices.
    -Honey, molasses, corn syrup, etc.
    -Starches such as breads, rice, potatoes, carrots, etc.

    Foods & beverages that contain artificial sweetners
    such  as Nutrasweet, Splenda, & saccharin are
    allowed.

    Six (6) hours prior to your appointment please
    stop eating & drink only the following:
    -
You may have clear water, black coffee, or tea.
    - Arriving to your appointment well hydrated will help
      with your scan.
    -You may take your usual medicatations at the usual
      time with water.
    -You may take your pain medicatation if prescribed
      for the exam.

    Please dress warmly & wear comfortable
    clothing.
   
-Please refrain from wearing items containg metal as 
     much as possible.

    Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
    should not undergo PET imaging.
   
-Please notify the staff if there is a possibility of 
     pregnancy or you are currently breastfeeding.

    No exercising of any kind for 24 hours prior to
    your appointment.
   
You will be in our office for approximately 2 hours.
    Please do not bring children under the age of 18 or 
    pregnant women with you to your appointment. As
    a precaution to any pregnant women & children,
    please keep a distance of six (6) feet or more for
    10 hours following you exam.
   

Ultrasound
    
For OB,Pelvic, & Renal exams, please arrive
     your exam with a full bladder.
     Abdomen exams, please have a fat-free
     diet the day before your exam, and eat
     nothing after midnight.

Xray
    
Wear comfortable clothing.
     You may be asked to remove jewelry for your exam.
     You may be asked to change into a patient gown for
     your exam.
