| Touch and Go was the feeling as turtle races started on Wednesday as the skies seemed to want to dump rain on Longville. But, the weatherman was correct and by the time the event started the ski dried up and turtle racers and their families had a beautiful afternoon.
A total of 350 turtles crossed the finish line during the afternoon, making a lot of kids and parents pleased. In the end it was two twin city racers that won the day.
Ten year old Nathan Colestock of Andover was the Grand Champion and 15 month old Sophia McCaffrey of Brooklyn Park was the Grand Slowpoke champion.
Fifteen resorts participated in the Resort Turtle Race. They were: Green Roof Lodge, Balsam Bay Resort, Angler’s Isle Resort, Pine Haven Resort, Bear Paw Lodge, Timber Trails Resort, Dancing Waters Resort, Pinedale Resort, Kee-Nee-Moo- Sha Resort, Pine Ridge Resort, Minne Teepee Resort, Girl Lake Resort, Little Boy Resort, DOK Holiday Resort, Woman Lake Lodge, All Seasons Resort, and Broadwater Lodge. Capturing the title of best resort racer was six year old Natalie Engman of St. Michael, MN who with her family was vacationing at Pine Ridge Resort.
The afternoon of race activities started out with many hula hoop competitors. Then came the dance contests. Four outstanding chicken dance singers sang the chicken dance song as nearly 100 competed in the chicken dance. The singers were: Courtney Chapman of Neola, IA; Madeline Steele of Westfield, IN; Lexi Wayne of Ellendale, MN; and Amanda Halek of Golden Valley, MN. Leading the YMCA dance were Ellis McBrayerof Cedar Rapids, IA; Katie Spoon of DesMoines, IA; Frank Fowler of Los Angeles, CA; and Molly Cronin of Lake City.
