Turtle Race Winners

June 25, 2008

“It is family fun at its best.” That is what moms and dads said at Wednesday’s Turtle Races in downtown Longville. The crowd of an estimated 1000 persons, spread out over all of downtown Longville were dancing up a storm, contesting with hula hoops, playing “county fair” types of games and eating plenty of food from ice cream to hot dogs to popcorn to cotton candy to fry-bread to sno-cones, celebrating a beautiful day with their families and in the north country. There were even airplane rides in the area provided, for a fee, by a new chamber member LakeCountryAirService.com  As one mom said, “What more could we ask for?”.

There were plenty of young people and parents who displayed their skill at twirling the hula hoop around their tummies. Most hula hoops hit the pavement within a few seconds but then there were some young people, moms, dads, and grandma’s and grandpa’s who displayed a better than average skill at hula hooping.  When it came to dancing the Macarena, or hoky poky, or chicken dance, or YMCA dance, there were literally hundreds of adults and young people who set aside their inhibitions and had a great time dancing to the music. The judges, trying to discern which were the best dances, handed out plenty of food treats to those who excelled.

Helping to lead the chicken dance and singing the chicken dance song were a great group of young people. They were Michelle Sahr of Bloomington, MN, Kayla Davis of Bloomington, MN; Alex Moore of Superior, WI; Mikayla Brooks of Apple Valley, MN and Rachel Swedin of Forest Lake, MN.

The real competition came when the turtle races started. The first race of the day is the resort turtle race. Fourteen resorts competed for the fastest racer.  Those resorts were Woman Lake Lodge, Pine Haven Resort, Tuck-A-Way Resort, Little Boy Resort, Timber Trails Resort, Broadwater Lodge, Lake Haven Acres, Kee-Nee-Moo-Sha Resort, Pine Ridge Resort, Cedar Beach Resort, Thunder Lake Lodge, Pleasant Pines Resort, Northland Lodge, and Andersen’s 4 Seasons Resort.
The winner was eleven year old Bruce Fore of North Branch, MN who with his family were vacationing at Timber Trails Resort.

Now, when it came to the regular races, 330 racers competed for the top honors.
In the end, the winners all came from Illinois.  The Grand winner was three year old Madison Cyze of Chicago and the Grand Slowpoke winner was one year old Kendra Brown of Sugar Grove.
