| Nearly 300 turtle racers, appreciating the beautiful sunny and warm June afternoon, descended on downtown Longville for the first turtle race of the season.
Wednesday, June 11 had been scheduled as the first turtle race of the season but was cancelled because of cold, wet and windy weather. “What a difference a week makes”, said John Weins, race director as he looked out from the turtle mobile to view the estimated 300 spectators and racers on main street.
The excitement was high as throngs of kids, teens and adults participated in hula hoop contests and dance contests prior to the start of the races. Leading the Chicken Dance were four young people. They were Cole Adams, Waterloo, IA; Nathan Butrum, Rochester, MN; Sierra Rash, Pittsburg, MO; and Nick Eaton, Minnetonka, MN.
Four young people led the YMCA dance contest. There were Trent Mix, Longville; Ashley Woodruff, McHenry, IL; Amanda; and Esther Packard, Florence, CO.
The first race of the day was the Resort Turtle Race that featured thirteen area resorts. The participating resorts included: Pine Haven Resort, In The Wilds, Sleeping Fawn Resort, Trapper’s Landing, Tall Pine Lodge, Evergreen Lodge, Ruttger’s Pine Mountain Resort, Pinedale Resort, Kee-Nee-Moo-Sha Resort, Green Roof Lodge, Timber Trails Resort, The Longville Inn, and Balsam Bay Resort.
Capturing the honors as the best racer was four year old Macey Dvorak of Wassanar, Netherlands who with her family was vacationing at Pinedale Resort on Wabedo Lake near Longville.
Two Twin City Suburban racers won the grand champion honors. Glen Neddermeyer of Orono, MN was the grand champion for the green ribbon fast racers and seven year old Carter Larimer of Farmington, MN was the grand slowpoke champion for the white ribbon winners.
The next turtle race is Wednesday, June 25 beginning at 1 p.m.
