| The last turtle race of the season for Longville was just as exciting as all of the other races. A total of 292 racers competed for the coveted honors. Proudly displaying their championship pins were eleven year old Micah Ehlers of Brooklyn Center, MN who was the Grand Winner and seven year old Natalie Drescher of Savage, MN who was the Grand Slowpoke Winner.
Enthusiasm was high for the hula-hoop and dance contests A record number of young people, moms, dads, and grandma’s and grandpa’s demonstrated their hooping skills. The kids raise their hands hoping to be picked to sing the chicken dance song during the dance contest on the turtle mobile stage. Four twin city area young people sang the chicken dance song. They were Natalie Beiter of Coon Rapids, Logan Schwein of Maple Grove, Caiflin Pott of Lake Elmo, and Ashley Aylsworth of St. Francis. An equally enthusiast group led the YMCA dance Contest. They were Desiree Gonzales of Suffield CN, Al Zahn of Longville, and Ashley Ciskovsky of Princeton, MN.
Fourteen Resorts with their representatives participated in the Resort Turtle Race. They were Samson of Kee-Nee-Moo-Sha Resort, Brandon of Broadwater Lodge, Layten of Family Tradition, Emily of Mascot Resort, Daniel of Woman Lake Lodge, Ananda of Borde DuLac Lodge, Collin of Pine Ridge Resort, Harbor of Camp O’ My Dreams Resort, Lawrence of Minne Teepee Resort, Caleb of Tri-Birches Resort, Tess of Little Ponderosa Resort, Kayole of Thunder Lake Lodge, Bobby of Little Boy Resort, and Ashleigh of Timber Trails Resort. The winner was 8 1/2 year old Lawrence Forstner of Maplewood, MN who with his family was vacationing at Minne Teepee Resort.
For this final turtle race of the season, an exhausted yet exhilarated group of volunteers help make the afternoon enjoyable for the racers. Justin Wicks and Ryan Skajewski helped Mary Lou Austin judge racers and dancers. Rose Franta, Stan Johnson and Terri Felegy registered racers. Jim Felegy and Sue Meyer sold tickets and souvenirs Marge Mc Donald and Dodee Colberg handed out prizes. Game operators were Jordan Loren, Peg Atzen, Pat Boen, Ed Lammers, Chuck Colberg Mike Froehlig, Cody Lilyquist, Trevor Lilyquist and Elsie Hagen. Set-up and tear down was done by Gerry Broshar, Tony Ozark, the game operators and helpers from Camp Olson, YMCA. Dave Wodrick and Herman Hohlen were street monitors. Gordon Atzen popped the “ Best” popcorn on Main Street. John and Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar took care of announcing duties.
