Fourth of July "Independence Day" Activities - 2009

The Longville Chamber provides area residents and visitors with a full day of family activities in downtown Longville.  Click here for a schedule of the 2009 4th of July event.

Longville’s 4th of July Celebration will be held on Saturday, July 4 in downtown Longville. For the sixth year the City of Longville will hold a Beer Garden next to the Docksider beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the Knights of Columbus will also operate Bingo downtown beginning at about 10:00. For the forth year, the Chamber has arranged to have pony rides for kids. These rides will be held on the Tabaka property next to the bait shop. The rides will begin about 10 a.m.

Water Wars, this year, will be held at Birdies Mini Golf, located across from the Woodland Bank. The Chamber will be providing Kid’s Races this year West of the Bait shop. The races begin after the parade at about 12:15 p.m. There will be plenty of food for hungry celebrators throughout the day. The chamber will sell hot dogs in the morning in front of Lori’s Luvs. Again his year there will be a food court in the parking lot west of the post office. Lunches and food treats will be sold through-out the day by the Chamber, Young at Heart Seniors, Karen’s Fry Bread and Jo's Mini Donuts. The Chamber will be selling Mary Etta’s pies by the slice or by the whole in front of the Docksider.  Downtown in front of Frosty’s, cheese kurds will be sold and The Red Bird Café will be selling cotton candy. Over in the school parking lot will be the Lions Club, with a Pig Roast.

At about 10:00, parade participants can begin to line up for the 11:00 parade. Line up for the parade is at Salem Lutheran Church.  While Longville’s 4th of July Parade is not the biggest of all of the parades in the area, it has been dubbed as the most interesting. Many families plan and prepare all year for the humorous and outlandish float or unit that they bring into town. By all indications, this year’s parade will again be a joy to watch.

Following the parade, at about 1:00 Turtle Race registration and games begin. Hula Hoop contests and several dance contests, part of the pre-turtle race activities will be conducted until 2 p.m. when the turtle races will start.

That evening, after sundown, Longville’s spectacular fireworks over Girl Lake will begin. The fireworks will be launched from several pontoons which will be anchored out in the middle of Girl Lake.
