EMB Announces Honors Winners MARCH 13, 2006 -- Each EMB Honors embroidery competition has its unique surprises and delights, and the 2006 competition was no exception. Joel Rapp, owner of Bison Embroidery in Buffalo, N.Y., and last years Grand Champion Award winner, outdid himself in the jacket back category with a remarkable combination of embroidery, appliqué and chenille, garnering the overall honor again this year.
Two perennial winners Tom Moores Strawberry Stitch Co. of St. Louis, Mo., and Lisa Calders Lisa Calder Embroidery of Vidor, Texas once again struck gold, taking first place in the digitizing and stock designs on nonwearable categories, respectively. Charles Razenson of Unique Impressions, Bethpage, N.Y., was another repeat winner from last year, taking first place in the stock designs on wearables category and tying for Grand Champion Award runner-up honors.
Undeterred by not placing last year, Jason Zook of Rambow Inc., New London, Minn., returned to compete again this year and won first place in the embroidery on shirts category.
Another notable success story is that of Kristin Duprey of Style by Kristin Duprey, Bay Village, Ohio. Two years ago, she placed second in the Sue Weaver Memorial Award category for digitizers with less than two years of experience. This year she won the metallic & specialty threads category and tied for runner-up for the Grand Champion Award with her elaborate Irish step dance dress.
New to the competition and also first-time winners were Big Printing T-Shirt Co., San Leandro, Calif., and Regina Cassidy of It Takes a Stitch Custom Embroidery, Arlington, Va.
Weve always contended that good embroidery is good embroidery no matter who the judges are or where the judging takes place. We proved out this theory this year by inviting a new group of judges and holding the judging here in Atlanta. As always, they were tasked with judging the entries on a 1-to-10 scale in five distinct areas: difficulty, technical skill, visual impact, retail applicability and creativity. We then tallied all the scores to determine the winners, similar to the way in which events at the Olympics are judged. To prevent bias, all entries are identified only by numbers and the labels masked. Judging this year were Ivan Berzack, Embroidery Services Inc.; K.A. Brewer, Exceptional Embroidery & Gifts; Jeff Liscum, Southeastern Embroidery Works; and James Timmons, Wilcom America.
SWF sponsored the Grand Champion Award, and Corel and Robison-Anton/American & Efird sponsored the Grand Champion Runner-ups. Great Notions sponsored the two stock designs categories; Wilcom sponsored the digitizing category; and Madeira sponsored the metallic and specialty threads category.
EMB will display the first and second place winners at the EMB/IMPRESSIONS booth (1635/36) ISS Atlantic City, March 17-19. R.L.

Using a photograph of Mom and Dad in front of the fire station in North Merrick, NY, where her 88 year old dad is still active, Helen created an embroidered tapestry to emulate her parents. My mom passed away three years ago, explains Helen, and this was done from a photograph of them that I admired. I did the background with the new matte finish thread (Frosted Matt). Most of the rest was Madeiras Polyneon and metallic. I felt the matt finish on the background would make the image of my parents really pop out. While our photo doesnt do it justice, anyone who sees the actual stitchout at the ISS shows can attest to the obvious blood, sweat and tears
and love and creativity
that went into it. Helen offers embroidery, sign making, digital printing and screen printing at her shop, where she operates Tajima, Melco and SWF machines. EMB Announces the 2005 EMB Honors Winners
MARCH 28, 2005 -- As soon as we opened the first boxes to log in the entries, we knew the 2005 EMB Honors embroidery competition would have its unique surprises and delights. In addition to the overall high quality of this year's entries, what especially pleased us was the variety, ranging from Charles Razenson's framed memorial to a fireman to Nancy Sherman's torah cover. In truth, our only disappointment was that more embroiderers didn't take advantage of the opportunity to show off their good work.
Our judges, some of whom had entered the competition in years past, were equally impressed with the caliber of this year's embroidery on display at ISS Atlantic City. They were tasked with judging the 98 entries on five criteria: difficulty, technical skill, visual impact, retail applicability and creativity. And though they approached the judging from the perspective of their different backgrounds, they were almost unanimous in their agreement on the winners in every category. Judging this year were Mike Doyle, buildyourjacket.com; Ginny Fineberg and Kathy Ostrander, Sandpiper Embroidery; Barb Geer, Grand Slam Designs; and Ed Levy, Digitize4u Inc.
Also, we took a new approach this year in providing prizes to the winners. Some 16 vendors volunteered to sponsor specific categories and offer awards ranging from $250 in merchandise for the category winners to $1,000 in cash for the Grand Champion Award winner. Sponsors for the Grand Champion Award, Grand Champion Runner-up and People's Choice Award were, respectively, SWF, Robison-Anton and American & Efird. Sponsors of the 13 categories were Ackermann North America, Dunbrooke, Gildan, Great Notions, Gunold, Ioline, Jerzees, Madeira, Otto Cap, Outer Banks, Sierra Pacific, Transfer Express and Wilcom. A contest like this benefits from broad support, and we appreciate that these sponsors put their names behind our effort to encourage originality, innovation and quality in the embroidery industry.
On behalf of our judges, sponsors and staff, we congratulate the 2005 EMB Honors winners for a job well done. - R.L.

Tribute to a Fireman
JUNE 01, 2005 -- Charles Razenson is an embroiderer and a firefighter who has found a moving way to combine these two seemingly unrelated pursuits: For the past four years, he has been creating framed embroidered memorials and giving them to the families of fallen firemen.
Speak with Razenson, and you quickly realize how genuinely passionate he is about his role as a volunteer fireman and about his work as the owner of Unique Impressions, his embroidery business in Bethpage, N.Y. But in fashioning these memorial pieces, one of which he entered in the 2005 EMB Honors, he seems to have responded to a higher calling.
As Razenson tells it, on Father's Day 2001, Queens, N.Y., suffered a major loss when three members of FDNY were killed in the line of duty. "Two of the members killed were from Rescue 4, Queens, N.Y., and were customers of ours," he said. "Their captain, and our friend, Brian Hickey, set out to design an embroidered memorial piece to depict the heroics shown that date." According to Razenson, Hickey was also seriously injured on that day and didn't report back to work till Sept. 11, 2001, when he lost his life in the World Trade Center terrorist attack.
"I waited six months to finally complete the piece Brian had commissioned," Razenson said. "I then made similar pieces in Brian's memory for his home, his parents, Rescue 4 and the Bethpage Fire Department, for which he was a volunteer."
In the aftermath of 9-11, additional requests for memorials came in, this time from the Nassau County Fire Training School, which lost eight members.
Razenson's most recent memorial, and the one he entered in the EMB Honors, represented a different type of tribute, created to honor the life of Frank Pendl, former chief of the Bethpage Volunteer Fire Department, chief training officer at the Nassau County Fire Training School, fire marshal for the County of Nassau and founder of the Nassau County Firefighter Museum. "Frank was a wonderful man, a mentor and leader who touched the hearts of all he met," said Razenson. R.L.
