HISTORY Twenty years ago under the guidance of a forward-thinking Board of Directors and in alliance with the supportive community, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk pulled together its scarce resources to build a home for a single mother in Riverhead. First working out of a garage in Rocky Point before moving into a church office, the Habitat Suffolk founders began developing relationships with municipalities, corporations, churches, schools, private groups, and individuals to form the organization as it is known today. Over 120 houses later and we still can’t stop saying thank you to all of you who contribute your time, talents, prayers, and resources to make it all happen. Over 465 (yes – 465!) people now live in safe and affordable homes that didn’t exist in 1988. Of those 465, two-hundred and ninety eight are children who now know the comfort and security of their very own bed in their very own house that they won’t have to worry about leaving until they choose to go out into the world. Why? How? Because of you. You join us in our mission to “work in partnership with people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with God's people in need by building houses so that there are decent communities in which people can live and grow into all that God intended and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.” For this we thank each sponsor, each contributor, each volunteer and each and every one of you that walks onto a worksite or into a fundraiser for your energy, time and commitment. The people of Suffolk County and surrounding communities are what make the Habitat engine run.
