A portrait of the artist at age 38. WPA printmaker and social realist, Kainen worked in intaglio, lithography, serigraphs & monotypes, as well as painted. Etched while Kainen was Curator at the Division of Graphic Arts at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, a post, which he was the first to hold. After his retirement he again worked full time as an artist, having many exhibitions. One of his designs was chosen for a floor mosaic at Washington’s new Reagan
International Airport.
