Question:
I have a big scar from top down on my back from surgery.  Can I still tan?  How is tanning going to effect my scar?

Answer:
Before I answer your question.  When did you have surgery?
If it was recent, you may need to wait 6 to 8 weeks before exposing yourself to ultra violet light.  However, if it is healed, than you will be safe.  Some doctors tell you that tanning will make the scar look bad, but in own experience (I had open heart surgery), I started to tan 6 weeks after surgery and there is very little scarring at all.  You would be extremely hard pressed to see my scar from the front of my neck to the end of ribs.   My personal belief is that when you expose your skin to ultra violet light, it will kill bacteria and promote healthy growth of the new skin cells.

You do want to make sure that you are not on any antibiotics, and check your medications to see if they will make your sun sensitive.   A personal evaluation would probably be best to review your particulars before you start tanning.
