Zambia Project

The Zambia Project: providing hope through education

Zambia Project mission: to provide hope through education for Zambia's most vulnerable children. The Zambia Project raises money for the Zambia Open Community Schools (ZOCS.) ZOCS provide a basic education to children who would not otherwise have an opportunity to go to school. Most ZOCS students are orphans, and all live in seriously impoverished conditions.

Project history: The Zambia Project was founded in the fall of 2001 by a group of five students and a staff member. The student organization has grown to include scores of students and has raised over $130,000 for ZOCS.

Our personal connection to Zambian children: 27 St. Norbert College students have traveled to Zambia to visit the children and teachers of ZOCS. They have seen first-hand the powerful impact of Zambia Project donations, which have been used to purchase:

  • Books and supplies for students and teachers
  • Construction materials for schools
  • Teachers' training and salaries
  • Self-sustainability projects for individual schools
  • Hammermills for grinding maize
  • Boreholes to provide life-sustaining water on school grounds

Students who have traveled to Zambia have returned to tell their stories about the courage and determination of the children of ZOCS who want desperately to continue to go to school. Students who are involved in the Zambia Project may or may not wish to travel to Zambia, but all ZPers have one thing in common: they are dedicated to providing hope through education for Zambia's children.

The De Pere Rotary Club is interested in helping the SNC students with this worthwile project through club donations and and personal donations. If you are interested in helping with this cause, one student writes the following suggestion:

My freshman year I was apart of the Zambia Project on campus and although I don’t do much anymore, I try to help out when I can.  I don’t know if you have ever heard of the GoodSearch before, but it is a new search engine set up by Google, which allows non-profit groups to earn a penny for every search made in honor of the group.  You have to first type in the “Zambia project” in the 2nd task bar and then you search for whatever it is you are looking for after that.  It is really quick and easy, but it can really add up.
