Dog Bites
Massachusetts General Law Chapter 140 holds the dog’s owner liable for damage to a person or property.  The dog’s owner is held liable for personal injuries, scarring and wrongful death resulting from a dog bite or attack.

The law allows victims to recover compensation from a person whose negligent activity caused the injury, persons who violated laws prohibiting dogs from running at large and from individuals who knowingly kept a dog who had a history of injuring people.

Massachusetts law requires that the injured person prove that he or she was not trespassing, teasing, tormenting or abusing the dog.

Because of the statute of limitations for dog bites, victims have a limited time to file a case.
