Economic Development
Location - The city of Gustine in located 5 miles off of Highway 5 in central California. Highways 140 and 33 intersect the city. It is frequently used by travelers to get from the northern part of the state to the southern part of the state. It is also used as a route to get to Yosemite National Park.
Education and Infrastructure - Gustine is within easy driving distance to the University of California at Merced, the newest of the University of California campuses. There are also several community colleges in the area. There is an established municipal airport owned and operated by the City of Gustine. The airport boasts some of the lowest aviation fuel prices in the state. Railway services intersect part of the town.
Downtown Revitalization – The downtown is currently going through a focused revitalization process. Efforts are being made to determine streetscape and other aesthetic improvements. Architecture and shop facades will be evaluated for potential development. A committee has been formed to develop a focused vision for future progress. Efforts are being made to revitalize and yet maintain the original character of Gustine downtown. Antique shops abound in Gustine’s downtown.
Industrial Park – The City is also in the midst of developing an industrial park. A committee has been formed to steer this major effort. The Gustine general plan has a major area identified as a manufacturing and controlled industrial zone. Efforts are underway to develop these areas so that business and industrial operations may consider the many enterprise possibilities that the area has to offer.
Federal Enterprise Zone – The city of Gustine has recently been granted status as a federal enterprise zone. Employers may now qualify for tax subsidies if they qualify by purchasing equipment and employing income qualified workers. Contact city hall for further information on this program.
Housing – As a popular bedroom community for the bay area, Gustine offers affordable housing. Areas have been identified for possible annexation into the city limits. It is anticipated that controlled growth will provide for additional housing while maintaining quality of life standards that make Gustine a desirable place to live. Gustine’s future housing development will make it an ideal location for quality workforce housing.
