CHILDREN'S CONCERT SOCIETY -- A BRIEF HISTORY
|
The first three concerts for the children of our community were given by the newly-formed Akron Symphony Orchestra during the 1947-48 school year. They were so enormously successful that, despite the demise of the orchestra, the women's committee was determined to continue to provide musical pleasure and education to the school children of the Akron area. Accordingly, they formed a new organization--the Children's Concert Society--and presented the Cleveland Orchestra from 1948 until 1975. In 1970 CCS began also to present concerts by the Akron Symphony Orchestra, and has presented the Akron Symphony Concerts exclusively since 1976.
CCS has presented one or more series of concerts every single school year since its inception, and has faithfully fulfilled its mission of bringing live music to the children of our community by enriching their music education -- we estimate over 935,000 children have been introduced to the concert hall experience. Also, CCS has expanded its programming over time to include:
Concert hall performances of opera and ballet; Informal concerts in the schools; A Scholastic Composers Contest; Outreach programs.
CCS constantly reviews its programming in order to meet the current needs of each new generation. In cooperation with other community organizations, CCS now offers an after-school program at a inner-city school with a percussion workshop conducted by students from the Music Department at the University of Akron under the direction of Dr. Larry Snider. We also participate in many local community events. |
