Suggestions for People with Colds or Flu

I wrote up this information to give to my grand children when they leave for college.  I give them a First Aid Kit with the products I think they need in case they develop a cold or flu.

Zinc Lozenges are very helpful for sore throats.  They stop the reproduction of the cold virus.  You can use up to 12 a day for 8 days as needed.

Suck on a Sambucol lozenge at the first sign of a cold or flu.  It stops most viruses from entering your cells to use their energy mechanism to produce more viruses.  They recommend 4 a day, but I use 6 to 7 the first day, perhaps 5 the second.  By the third day I usually wake up feeling fine, but I find if I don’t keep using the lozenges for a couple of days, the symptoms return.  It also comes as a pleasant tasting liquid.

EVERYDAY you should take enough Vitamin C to assure that you have mushy stools.  To take Bio-C Plus, put a teaspoon in 1/4 glass of water and let it fizz.  When it finishes fizzing you can add as much or as little water as you like, and then drink it.  We also have Sustained Release Vitamin C tablets.  Take one morning and evening all the time, more if you are getting a cold.  We have several other forms of Vitamin C, including Vital Mixed Ascorbates, which is a pleasant-tasting powder that is made up of mineral ascorbates, ascorbic acid and natural fruit antioxidants.

We have things you can take to stimulate immune function, like Cellular Forte with IP6.  If you are starting a to get a cold, take two capsules, four times a day at first.  After the first day you can gradually decrease that until the symptoms are gone.

To treat the symptoms we call the Flu, start taking probiotics (acidophilus, bifidos) at the first sign, and take lots of it.  Take four to start and two every hour until the symptoms are gone.  We carry HLC (Human Lactic Commensuls), which comes in capsules or in an apricot-flavored powder.  We also have Primal Defense tablets. The good bacteria in these products compete with the flu for the receptor sites in the gut, forcing the bad bacteria out.

To kill off bacterial invasions of the gut, Citricidal is very fast and effective.  Take one and if you still have discomfort, after an hour, take another one.  It works for nausea and diarrhea. Don’t take at the same time as probiotics or you will kill the probiotics.

If you have an infection you should absolutely avoid foods that contain sugar or that will be quickly converted to sugar in your digestive tract.  These might include, bread, potatoes and rice and breakfast cereal.  Instead emphasize fat and protein foods such as nuts, meats, flax oil, eggs and soups made from meat stock. (Chicken soup!)

Salt water can be used as a gargle and can even be snuffed up the nose.   It smarts, but will be followed by relief.   It actually does kill off bacteria and viruses, and it’s very simple - just mix a teaspoon of table salt in 1/2 cup of warm water.  This solution can also be used as a sterile dressing for wounds.  In an article published in the Lancet, doctors said it worked better than any anti-biotic solution to prevent or cure infection.

I always chew Spry gum (made with Xylitol) if I have cold symptoms.  The children who chewed it had 40% less inner ear infections than the controls.  It starves to death the bacteria and viruses.  We also have a Xylitol nasal spray that clears your nose when you have a cold or a runny nose from allergies.  It is called Xlear (pronounced Clear).

If you have aches and pains, take Unizyme, which is an enzyme product that is amazingly anti -inflammatory.  I suggest it for arthritis patients and anyone with a pain problem.  It treats a lot of things aspirin does, without the bad side effects.  If it gives you stomach discomfort, it may mean you have H. pylori in your stomach that needs to be treated to prevent ulcers.

N-Acetyl L-Cysteine can be used almost like cough medicine.  It is very effective for any lung or sinus infection.  Take one or two capsules as needed for cough.

Calma is a blend of amino acids that are precursors to the inhibitory neuro-transmitters.  Take it to treat anxiety.  Your body just converts it to food, so you can take as much as you need – try taking 5 at a time.  If you are not noticeably better in half an hour take some more. 

To stay healthy, be sure to take these basic supplements EVERY DAY:

1 T Cod Liver Oil daily – this is the best way to get the Omega-3’s and Vitamins D & A that your body needs (especially important if you have dark skin, or if you do not get the sunshine that you need to make Vitamin D).
1 capsule of Selenium a day
at least 1 gram of Vitamin C morning and evening
3 multiple vitamins (Basic Nutrients) morning and evening
