Celebrating Tariq - A Birthday, A Foundation
Today (March 6, 2008) is my son Tariq's 34th birthday, and we celebrate it today at two San Diego Elementary schools, bringing the message once again of peace and freedom through forgiveness.
Although the genesis of this work is my son's tragic murder, there is victory. Just as the Phoenix rose from its ashes, the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF) has arisen, in honor of my son, and it has started an amazing movement that has grown to an international platform in 13 short years. In that time, we have reached millions of children and adults, teaching that love, happiness and world peace are possible.
Last night I had dinner with Tariq - as I do often - when I am home and alone for dinner. On the table, I put some flowers and my favorite photo of Tariq. I lit a candle and we ate together and chatted. He shared with me that he is living his mission. Tariq always wanted to be remembered for making a significant contribution to the world. It has happened through my workshops and keynote speeches, and through the work of TKF. In our discussion, my son asked that I acknowledge his mother Almas, his sister Tasreen, and all the staff, volunteers and the Board of TKF for the work being done in his honor. He is with us ... always!
For me, this celebration is significant at a very personal level. Tariq's gifts in my life have been immeasurable. I feel such deep gratitude to him that I am at a loss for words to articulate these feelings except for the tears that are rolling down my cheeks as I write this. It is because of Tariq that I have become a better person: more humble, more loving, more compassionate and more concerned about the children of the world and the conflicts of our world, than only about me.
 I was not always that way when Tariq was alive. Sure I volunteered for nonprofit organizations and tithed to my faith, but 80 percent of my focus was on me and my family. I really had not done anything to reach out to the children in my community or to create peace in the world. Now I spend 80 percent of my time talking to kids and adults about the importance and urgency of eradicating violence from our core and replacing it with love through the practice of forgiveness. With such, we can create a world at peace where our children and grandchildren can grow up safely with hope and opportunity. Truly, we have - as a nation - failed our responsibility to the young ones in our world who so desperately need us adults for their safety, growth and welfare. This breaks my heart, and we must simply do more and more and more and more.
There is such a need out there. I would never have known any of this but for Tariq's tragedy. This work I do today is so fulfilling and meaningful it has provided me with much happiness and joy. It allows me to be on my spiritual purpose hand in hand with the Universe. A great gift from Tariq!
