A Journey to the River Nile, an Old Friend

Azim_PublicEach December, I take vacation time away from my normal speaking schedule and social work. This past December I was most fortunate to spend my holidays in the holy land of Egypt. And I wish to share with you this magical experience.

I had been to Egypt many times before but it had been awhile.  So, it was good to get reacquainted with an old friend. The trip took me to the pyramids in Giza, to the Egyptian museum to see the incredible collection of the King Tut treasure, to Aswan to see the high dam and on a cruise on the Nile from Aswan to Luxor. After spending New Year's eve in Luxor, I finished the trip in Hurghada on the Red Sea.

It blows my mind and stretches my imagination to think that this ancient and sacred holy land is still in tact, after 5,000 years of history. This was a culture so advanced it could construct the great pyramids (still a mystery) and the amazing temples in Abu Simbel. Such creations transcend the mind and provide testimony to the power of the human spirit, all of it: 5,000 years ago.

I felt a profound connection to the universal spirit...

On my journey, I had the most amazing experience meditating on the Nile. As some may know, I was born in a town called Kisumu (an area of recent tribal violence), which is the largest port on Lake Victoria and a source of the Nile. Meditating on the Nile I was reminded of something quite intriguing to me:

Without the Nile there would be no Egypt (80 million Egyptians live on either side of the river). And - since Egypt is the cradle of ancient man - without Egypt there would be no civilization. This experience connecting with the Nile was so profound that in my meditations I could actually feel the holy river pulsating its rhythm in my blood. I was continuously in tears of joy while meditating here. The sacred energy of this ancient river has nourished people and life for thousands of years, and as I sat there, it was so palpable that it completely overwhelmed me with a feeling of bliss. Here, I felt a profound connection to the universal spirit.

If you have not yet made it to Egypt, I strongly recommend a visit, and a meditation on the Nile ... it is a divinely sweet experience. As I write you, I am re-living that moment of absolute bliss, and feel immense gratitude for the Nile and the blessing of this wonderful journey.

I will never forget this trip, a magical one that reminds me of our power to transcend the mind and embrace the highest that the human spirit has to offer. May we always remember this and reside forever ... in that place.

Many blessings,
Azim Khamisa
