There is a reason I write these messages, a reason I travel extensively speaking before groups, children, inmates and dignitaries. And there is a reason I do Forgiveness Workshops, like the one coming up Nov. 10 in San Diego.

And why is that? The answer points me back to one of the most defining moments in my life.

I have often said that my son Tariq's death was a life-changing event. The question I asked a million times was "why did God take Tariq away at the age of just 20 years, in the prime of his life?" He was such an important part of the family, and today, 12 years later, is missed beyond words can describe. But often when we are inflicted with meaningless tragedies, we fail to see the deeper meaning. Nothing happens in a vacuum or without a reason. I can truly say that the deeper meaning in this tragedy was to propel me in the work I do today with kids and adults.

So when I am asked why I do this work, my first response points to healing - yours, mine and ours. Every time I reach the mind or heart of a child or adult, it provides me healing and creates spiritual currency for my beloved son. Secondly, I do the work because I have made a commitment to heal the wounds of society by teaching and role modeling forgiveness. I am so amazed at the work of the last 12 years in which hundreds of thousands have received the healing and blessing that comes from forgiveness. Among those healed are estranged fathers from their children, estranged mothers from their children, estranged siblings, business partners, peers, ex-spouses, crime victims and the list goes on.

Extending my hand of forgiveness to the family of my son's killer has helped not only my family and his family, but also many others looking for the same sort of solace. The ripple effect continues to extend way beyond my own circle as I now travel the world teaching that through forgiveness we can create love and happiness in our own lives, as well as contribute to fostering peace in the world.

What is our individual responsibility to bring about peace in our world, recently so war-torn? Are we deeply committed to world peace? If we are NOT, will we ever see it in our lifetime? It begins with us all. Through forgiveness you will first be at peace with yourself, then your family and then your community. How do I know that? Because I have discovered this peace.
